WHO’S vs WHOSE / ITS vs IT’S / YOUR vs YOU’RE

Marissamakesthings and kb-running both requested WHO’S vs WHOSE, but since it ties with ITS vs IT’S as probably one of the most common mistakes I see, I’m going to cover both here as well as YOUR / YOU’RE since someone also requested it. 

Who, it, and you are all pronouns, and that’s where people get confused. While 99% of the time, an apostrophe is used to indicate possession, it’s not used that way with pronouns. 

WHO’S is a contraction for “who is / who has”.

WHO’S going to the store?
The guy WHO’S stayed with me all week is rad.
WHO’S that girl with your boyfriend? 

WHOSE is the possessive form of “who”. 

WHOSE turn is it? 
Do you know WHOSE car that is?
WHOSE nachos am I eating?

Likewise:

IT’S is a contraction for “it is / it has”

IT’S almost time to end this grammar lesson.
IT’S really hard to think of examples sometimes.
If you’re looking for your dinner, IT’S on the table.

 ITS is the possessive form of “it”. 

The kitten wants ITS toy. 
My iPad is in ITS case.
This post has almost run ITS course.

and YOU’RE is a contraction for “you are / you were” while YOUR is the possessive form of “you.” 

YOU’RE probably going to be mad that I ate YOUR nachos.
